In today’s day and age, electric vehicles are becoming more popular than ever. We are heading towards a world where electric vehicles are the most popular mode of transport. So, if you are considering purchasing an electric vehicle, it is important to understand the different charging points for electric vehicles. This blog will discuss the types of Electric Vehicle charging points to help you understand what is required to live with an electric vehicle.

What are The Types of Charging Points for Electric Vehicles?

A charging point for an electric vehicle is an outlet where the vehicle can be plugged in and charged. There are three different types of charging points: Level 1, Level 2, DC fast charging and Wireless.

Level 1 Charging Points

A Level 1 charging point is the slowest charging option and is typically used for household charging. A Level 1 charging point uses a 120-volt alternating current (AC) and can add 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging. To install a Level 1 charging station, you will need a dedicated circuit that is 20 amps or less. This means that it can be installed in any home without having to upgrade the electrical panel.

Level 1 charger points are relatively inexpensive and can be installed without any permits. The main downside of Level 1 charging stations is that they charge slowly, so if you are looking to add a lot of range quickly, this may not be the best option for you. However, if you only need to charge your car overnight, it could be perfect.

Level 2 Charging Points

Level 2 charging stations are faster than Level 1 charging stations. They add 10 to 20 miles of range per hour of charging. To install a Level 2 charging station, you will need a dedicated circuit that is 40 amps or less. This type of charger can be installed in any home without having to upgrade the electrical panel.

Level 2 charging stations are more expensive than Level 1 charging stations. But, they charge much more quickly. If you are looking for a fast way to charge your car, or if you travel long distances, this may be your best option.

DC Fast Charging Points

DC fast charging stations are the fastest charging option. They can add 60 to 80 miles of range in just 30 minutes of charging. This charging point is generally found in industrial and commercial settings. This is a result of it being far more powerful than a home charging station. They use up to 480 volts of direct current (DC) power. Due to the amount of power required, these charging stations generally require a dedicated electrical panel. This means that they are much more expensive than Level 1 and 2 charging stations. If you own a business and require charging stations for electric vehicles, then a DC charging point could be the perfect option.

Wireless Charging Points

The final type of charging point is a wireless charging station. Wireless charging is a very new form of technology. Wireless charging stations use electromagnetic induction to charge your car without the need for plugging in. These charging points are still in development and are not widely available. Many new electric vehicles come with the option to add wireless charging, but it is important to check before purchasing an electric vehicle if this is something that you are interested in.

Installing a Charging Point for Electric Vehicles for You

So, now that we have discussed the different types of electric charging points, you can hopefully begin to decide which charging point is for you. If you would like to install one in your home, level 1 or level 2 are the most suitable. Finding the correct one is down to your personal preference,  budget and charging needs.

If you are a business owner, then a DC fast charging point could be perfect for you. These charging points are much more expensive than household charging points. But, they offer a quick charge for those who need it. Perfect if you have a building with lots of electric vehicles.

Finally, if you are interested in the newest form of technology, wireless charging stations are beginning to appear on the market. These are still in development, so it is important to check that your electric vehicle is compatible before purchasing a wireless charging station. It goes without saying that these are particularly expensive, but are far easier and less hassle to use than the other forms or charging points.
